Nutrition for Sports Performance
Ai Jerome is a trained Sports Dietitian, having completed the Sports Dietitan’s Australia training program at the Australian Institute of Sport, Canberra.
Skinfold assessment also available.
Nutrition issues in sports and athletics begin to emerge for those who have a high-level of participation in sport.
Do you want to know what you should be eating before and after your race or your game?
DO you want to know what do you need to eat/drink to maintain your energy levels during your sporting event?
DO you wonder what the best fuels are to eat/drink to help repair and restore your body in readiness for the next training session/event?
A trained sports dietitian will help you achieve your nutritional goals through tailored training and race meal plans, body composition measurement and manipulation, as well as nutritional advice and guidance for pre, during and post-exercise.
Whether its an adolescent athlete (a son or daughter aged between 12 to 18 years of age) or an elite athlete – it’s important to ensure athletes are receiving the proper nutrients and fuel to support them throughout their day and through their sport.
Adolescent Athlete
The adolescent athlete is in a unique situation. Adolescents must meet the nutritional requirement for not only competition sports and performance but ALSO the right nutrition to ensure healthy growth and development.
Ai will assess your child’s nutrition requirements, their growth, daily needs and specific training needs in the first appointment. From there, a tailored nutrition plan is developed with specific recommendations and strategies to achieve their goals.
Achieve your nutritional goals through
tailored training and race meal plans,
body composition measurement and manipulation,
as well as nutritional advice and guidable for pre, during and post-exercise.
Skinfolds and Body Fat Assessment.
Skinfold assessments and body fat measurement and assessment can also be conducted in your Sports Nutrition consultation, on request. Ai is a certified ISAK anthropometrist, Level 1.
Low body fat can be an advantage in swimming for agility, power and technique. However each individual should have their own body composition goal and should consult with an Accredited Sports Dietitian for guidance to avoid compromising health or performance.
Nutrition for sports can be quite specific. It depends on the type of training (weights, power sports, ultra/ endurance sports) frequency of your training, the intensity, duration of sessions and stage of your training.
What to expect
Whether you are training for an event in the future, or have a specific goal in mind, Ai takes into consideration all these factors as well as your metabolic status (e.g. adolescence, rehabilitation after injury, post-natal etc), special dietary requirements such as food intolerances or conditions, and your lifestyle in order to structure your plan.
At your initial consultation, we will identify the performance outcomes that you need to achieve,
such as:
-
improved power to weight ratio
-
making weight
-
reduction in body fat mass
-
maintenance of energy levels and fluid balance during competition
Your eating patterns will be analysed, as well as your usual nutritional and fluid intake during exercise and/or competition. Based on your energy requirements, training schedule and performance levels, an individual sport-specific nutrition program will be designed that includes:
-
detailed meal plan to achieve the desired athletic outcome
-
pre-event plan that includes a carbohydrate loading phase (if appropriate)
-
specific during-event nutrition and hydration strategies
-
recovery plan
